In some ways respiration in humans is like respiration in snakes, but in other ways it is not the same. The parts of the human body that are involved in respiration are the air passages (from the nose to the throat), trachea, bronchi, two lungs, and the muscles in the chest and the diaphragm.

The respiratory system of a snake includes a trachea (windpipe), bronchi, lungs and air sac. The snake’s respiratory system starts in the back of its mouth and ends near the heart. It has a left and right lung, but the left lung is non-functioning. The right lung is elongated (long and thin) and covers almost two thirds of its body. Snakes do not have a diaphragm, air enters and leaves the lung by the movement of the body muscles and ribs. Humans have a diaphragm which controls our breathing by contracting and relaxing. Both humans and snakes have two bronchi leading to the lungs.
